February Calendar

Closing Reception

December 15 6p-9p

In the 1990s, Chicana/o students across California organized around issues of the time - state legislation that impacted communities of color, the struggle for representation in the educational system and a fight to reveal the legacies of colonialism in the region. Focusing on San Diego, Memorias en Movimiento - in partnership with the Centro Cultural de la Raza - will host an intergenerational symposium to bring activists and artists of that time together with contemporary leaders and community members. Alongside the panel of speakers, will be an exhibit of photos and other memorabilia of this generation’s movement work and contributions. This exhibit was inspired by Adolfo’s recent podcast titled, “Forgotten Revolutionary” which profiled the activism of early 1990s Chicano activist and radio DJ Oscar Gomez.

The Memorias en Movimiento exhibition will be viewable at Centro Cultural de Raza in San Diego October 7th - December 17, 2023. Closing Reception Dec 15, 2023.

Team: Adolfo Guzman-Lopez, LA-based writer/journalist (LAist 89.3), Michelle Tellez, professor of Mexican American Studies (U of A), and Maria Figueroa, professor of English, Literature, & Humanities (Mira Costa CC). Curated by Katie Ruiz, Chicana artist and activist and creator of "The Pompom Project".

IN XOCHTLI, IN CUICATL ~ FLORICANTO ~ FLOWER & SONG
DECEMBER 13, 5pm-8pm

In Xochitl, in Cuicatl is a celebration of the profound connection between nature and the human spirit, expressed through the forms of floricanto—where both flowers and songs intertwine to create a vibrant tapestry of culture and identity. This duality reflects the essence of life in Mesoamerican traditions, where the act of singing and the blooming of flowers are seen as celebrations of existence, resilience, and joy.

Flowers represent beauty, transience, and the cycles of life, while song conveys the narratives of ancestors, memories, and ongoing aspirations. Together, they serve as powerful mediums through which the richness of the past is honored and the future is envisioned.

The imagery of flowers permeates the cultural landscape, reminding us of the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of nurturing our environments—both natural and cultural. Musica, Palabra, Poesia, Canto, in their diverse manifestations, allow individuals and communities to express their stories, unite in shared experiences, and maintain our cultural lifeways.
